Job Description Summary:

The Oncology RN Clinician is a licensed professional who provides evidence-based care to adult and geriatric patients during all phases of their oncology treatment. The Oncology RN Clinician works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary healthcare team to provide patient centered care utilizing an in-depth knowledge of oncology disease states, treatment and critical thinking skills. Responsibilities are to provide and coordinate patient care including but not limited to; direct Medical Oncology clinics to provide for physician patient consultation, ensure labs and appropriate tests are completed and reviewed in a timely manner, provide education and support for patients and families and to interact with triage to provide an extension of the clinical support. The Oncology RN Clinician will provide follow-up for patients after clinic and treatment appointments to ensure continuity of care using evidence-based nursing practices to achieve safe, quality care for patients and families. The Oncology RN Clinician is expected to demonstrate technical competence, profession and clinical judgement and communication skills. The Oncology RN Clinician is expected to participate in continuous learning and staying abreast of the latest evidence-based practices in oncology.

Job Description

  • Oversees the overall operation of the clinics to ensure all patients are seen in a timely fashion, rescheduled for follow up appointments and scheduled appropriately for treatments and other procedures as ordered by the physician.
  • Clinic duties include a high level of interaction with physicians, comprehensive patient teaching regarding chemotherapy and side effects, and ensuring labs and other tests are ordered appropriately.
  • Demonstrates expertise and maintains knowledge base in the current care of oncology patients including all therapies related to patient treatments and outcomes.
  • Performs appropriate patient assessments including but not limited to; medical history update, medication reconciliation and focused system assessment and documents appropriately. Identify changes in patient status by recognizing signs/symptoms of adverse reactions and side effects. Communicated pertinent information concerning patient condition to appropriate provider.
  • Maintains accurate documentation of assessments, treatments, education, medications and patient response, pain assessment, critical labs and other care as needed.
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures related to use and route of medications administered in the clinic as well as knowledge of medications and side effects.
  • Communication to appropriate resources such as pharmacy, social work, etc. regarding need for preauthorization for medications, tests or hospitalizations. Communication to appropriate resources when no coverage exists for patients.
  • Clinician uses evidence-based practices to ensure quality outcomes for patients.
  • Clinician assumes responsibility for all patient care including follow up with patient, family, physician, triage, APRN and other staff to ensure quality care provided in a timely manner. Appropriate follow up calls after clinic and/or treatment appointments including but not limited to; missed appointments, cancelled appointments to ensure continuity of care.
  • Collaboration with the interdisciplinary healthcare team including Clinical Trials department to ensure compliance with requirements and proper procedures are followed for all clinical trial protocols and other aspects of patient care.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the healthcare team to provide appropriate education and support services/resources (community,etc.) and assist with appropriate referrals to resources to meet the needs of the oncology patient.
  • Clinician initiates appropriate consent form and follows policies/procedures for all procedures and treatments including clinical trials.
  • Functions independently and provides care based on knowledge, established standards of care, policies and procedures and exhibits high level of critical thinking. Supervises and delegates to all unlicensed personnel efficiently and appropriately to guide patient care.
  • Participates in quality and patient safety/experience and performance improvement initiatives. Participates in various committees representing the Cancer Center. Participates in preparation for various accreditation surveys such as FACT, Joint Commission, NAPBC.
  • Evaluate outcomes by continuously monitoring patient goals and progression toward achievement of goals.
  • Continuous professional growth as demonstrated by: maintain professional certification in Oncology, maintain chemotherapy provider card, attends and participates in local, regional and national conferences and disseminates information to peers. Participates in community activities and cancer center projects and initiatives.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or as required to meet the needs of the facility, department and patient.

Additional Job Description

Education / Accreditation / Licensure (required & preferred):

Graduation from an accredited/approved school of nursing

BSN preferred, must enroll or obtain degree within 2 years of hire.

Current unrestricted Kentucky license required.

ONS Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Provider Card Required.

ONCC certification (OCN, BMTCN and/or CBCN) preferred upon hire, must obtain within 1 year of eligibility.

Experience (required And Preferred)

3 years oncology patient care experience preferred.
